Attendees of 2005 Reunion

The above attendees of the 2005 reunion in San Antonio would like to express our thanks to Fred and Joan Deats for showing us such a wonderful time. Such hospitality can only come from Texas.

We stayed on the world famous “San Antonio Riverwalk” and we all were able to walk into the main area of town to see the Alamo, Tower of the Americas and other San Antonio sites.

Fred and Joan also arranged tours to LBJ’s Texas White House, Admiral Nimitz’s Historical Center and we enjoyed a Texas BBQ at one of the oldest cattle ranches in Texas. Yahoo to the Deats!

Our 2006 reunion will be hosted by Fred Schmitz on Hilton Head Island, SC, where we will be staying at the Holiday Inn Oceanfront.   (http://www.hihiltonhead.com/)

Ron Uber

Ronald James Uber, 70, of West Salem passed away Thursday, August 18th, at home surrounded by his family.

He was born May 20, 1935, in Rochester, New York to Evelyn and James Uber. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Navy where he spent 3 years aboard ship as an Opticalman. While stationed at Great Lakes attending school, he met and fell in love with Sylvia H Bangsberg, a teacher in Racine, WI. They were married on July 19, 1958 and moved to West Salem in 1960.

A devoted husband and father, Ron & Sylvia have four wonderful daughters, Sheryl, Sandra, Susan, and Sheila. He enjoyed doing yard work and had a passion for decorating for all of the seasons. It was not unusual to see something lit up in the yard. He loved train sets and was always building villages around them. Ron also loved animals and always had a dog around the house.

Ron worked for Microcard-NCR for 20 years as the Quality Control Supervisor. During this timeframe, Ron graduated from WWTC with a degree in Marketing and completed his National Certification in the Emergency Medical Technician Program. He then went to work at Gundersen Lutheran as a medical technician in the Emergency Trauma Center for 20 years and then transferred to the Urgent Care Center in Onalaska, where he worked for 6 more years. After retiring from Gundersen Lutheran in 2001, he continued to work there part-time until 2005. Ron also worked part time as the Deputy Medical Examiner and Deputy Sheriff for La Crosse County. Ron’s military service included 7 years as an Army Medic and then as a Navy Corpsman. He retired in December of 1993 after 24-years of dedicated military service. He enjoyed the yearly reunions with his shipmates from the USS Cadmus.

In 1978, Ron & Sylvia started the West Salem 1st Responders. Their efforts and dedication helped provide the West Salem area valuable emergency care. The Village of West Salem honored Ron on May 3, 1986 by proclaiming that day "Ron Uber Day." In 1987, Ron was the first recipient of the Coulee Region "First Responder of the Year" award and in 1993, the West Salem 1st Responders dedicated their building to Ron & Sylvia. Ron also assisted several groups throughout the state in setting up their First Responders.

Ron enjoyed camping with his family through the years, starting out in tents and later in a motor home. Ron & Sylvia were active members of the Re Lax In Campers and the Winnebago Itasca Travelers (WIT). His last trip was in July to Forrest City, Iowa with the WIT Group for the National Rally. Ron always wanted a motor scooter and recently purchased one! One of his biggest enjoyments was driving it around West Salem during his last few weeks.

Ron’s associations include: The USS Cadmus Association, where he was a past President; Lions Club where he was past president; a member of American Legion Post 51; Christ Lutheran Church where he was a past president of the Couples and Men’s Clubs and where he had over 16 years of active service with the Lutheran Pioneers; West Salem & La Crosse Community Theaters where he was in 6 plays; the Wisconsin Coroners Association; and the Wisconsin EMT Association.
